The City of Prichard, Alabama is seeking a new Police Chief. The City has a population of 22,000 and is located just north of Mobile, Alabama in Mobile County. Interstates I-65 and I-165 pass through the City of Prichard and I-10 is located approximately 6 miles south of the city. The City of Prichard is a working class city with a variety of social issues including high crime. The Chief of Police reports to the Mayor and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the police department. The Mayor appoints the Police Chief. The Prichard Police Department is a full-service law enforcement agency with 35 sworn officers and numerous civilian employees. The department is comprised of divisions including Administration, Criminal Investigations, Patrol, Traffic, Records, Reserves, and Communications. The annual budget for the Police Department is approximately 1.7 million dollars.
Minimum Requirements:
1 A Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited college or university in criminal justice, political
science, or a closely related field.
2 A minimum of ten years law enforcement experience with five or more years of experience in a
command or supervisory level.
3 Must possess or have the ability to obtain an Alabama POST certification within six months of
appointment.
Preferential Skills and Training:
1 Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice with a concentration in management
2 Experience in a police agency serving a working class or lower social-economic area
3 Experience writing, managing and obtaining grants
4 Writing and implementing departmental policies and departmental procedures manuals.
5 Experience with various facets of policing including patrol, investigations and community
oriented policing

accomplishments, experiences, skills and/or training that the applicant believes would be beneficial to the City of Prichard should the applicant be chosen as the Police Chief for the City of Prichard. Applicant should also note any issues or weaknesses that might adversely affect her/his serving in the position of Police Chief. The application deadline is 5:00 P.M., July 27, 2013.
